The Canada Carbon Rebate (CCR), also called the Climate Action Incentive (CAI) payment, is a tax-free benefit provided by the federal government.
This program was launched in July 2023 to offset the cost of federal pollution pricing and to support small and rural communities. Payments are made quarterly through direct deposit or cheque, provided that individuals meet the eligibility criteria.
In 2025, the government is introducing the $500 CAI Payment Cheques, a continuation of its initiative to return fuel charge proceeds directly to households. Let’s look at how it works, who qualifies, and how much you can expect.
